- Two persons who were detained in connection with the death of 1-year-old Nicholas Dominici at a daycare center in New York City now face federal charges. Authorities claimed to have discovered enough fentanyl to kill 500 people. The daycare center served as a front for the drug trade.
- 4 infants under the age of three were exposed to fentanyl on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the Divino Nino Day Care in the Bronx, New York. A strong synthetic opioid that is 50–100 times more potent than morphine is called fentanyl.
- Nicholas Dominici, a 1-year-old infant, passed away after displaying signs of an opioid overdose. The other three infants were sent to a hospital and lived.
- In addition to being charged with murder, manslaughter, assault, and several drug offenses, the daycare owner Grei Mendez, 36, and her husband’s cousin Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41, who was renting a room within the home-based childcare facility, were also detained.
- A kilogram of fentanyl was discovered by investigators at the daycare buried beneath a rug where the infants were taking naps. Three kilo presses, which are tools used to package drugs, as well as a surveillance system were also discovered.
- The defendants had been planning to sell fentanyl since July 2023, and they were using the daycare center as a cover.
- Mendez’s husband, who was seen on camera exiting the area with two full shopping bags before the 911 call was made, is still being sought by police. He is sought for interrogation.
- Due to the quantity of narcotics discovered, the two suspects have been detained and now face federal prosecution. They are being detained without bail and might get a sentence of up to life in prison with a minimum of 20 years.
- Following the death of Nicholas Feliz-Dominici, a 1-year-old, last week, the two were first charged with murder but on Tuesday, federal prosecutors said they will now be charged with conspiracy to distribute drugs that caused death.
