- The mandate to lead the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been obtained by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president of Ghana. After receiving the delegates’ mandate to head the party, he announced his own aims and vision at a victory rally held at the Accra Sports Stadium. According to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, he owed it to Bawumia to assist in winning the 2024 presidential contest.
- In order to address the nation’s issues, Dr. Bawumia pledged to create an inclusive, self-sufficient in food, data-driven, systems-based nation that will actively engage in the global digital revolution. His goals were to develop and unleash the potential of young people, provide well-paying employment, and maintain growth via macroeconomic restraint. The party now faced two challenges: winning the general election in 2024 and guiding the country from economic recovery to prosperity.
- In the four-man race, Dr. Bawumia received 118,210 votes, or 61.47 percent of the total votes cast. He conveyed his appreciation to the party faithful for putting their faith in him. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, placed second with an amazing 71,996 votes, or 37.41 percent of the total. Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the former minister of food and agriculture, received 1,449 votes, or 0.75 percent of the total votes cast, while Francis Addai-Nimoh, the former MP for Mampong Ashanti, received 781 votes, or 0.41 percent of the total votes cast.
- During his triumphal address, Dr. Bawumia stated that the NPP continued to be the greatest choice for the advancement and well-being of Ghanaians. He said, “We will surely build a mighty nation” when these skills were harnessed. He expressed faith in the talent of Ghanaian youth in a variety of industries, including information technology, robotics, entrepreneurship, creative arts, and sports. He asked the young people to go on this “journey of great possibilities” with him.
- The triumph, according to Dr. Bawumia, belongs to the whole party membership, especially the dedicated grassroots activists at the constituency, electoral area, and polling place levels. He called on all party members and other candidates to come together and support him, stating that he was committed to working with each and every one of them to fulfill the goal of “breaking the 8.”
- Ghana could not afford for the opposition National Democratic Congress to return, especially under the leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama, President Akufo-Addo said. In order to win reelection, he urged the party to cooperate. The President expressed optimism that “when we are united and courageous, God will make the way for us to be victorious on December 7, 2024” although acknowledging that the elections the following year would not be simple.
- In a symbolic gesture, President Akufo-Addo gave Dr. Bawumia the party flag, thus designating him as the new flag bearer and leader. He complimented Dr. Bawumia on his efforts to become the flag bearer and acknowledged the progress he had made over the previous sixteen years.
- President Akufo-Addo highlighted strong leadership, wishing Dr. Bawumia well and expressing hope that he would bring the party together.
