- The government’s push to digitize the transport sector in Ghana has expanded to include the public transportation industry with the introduction of Tap and Go, a digital service for the transportation industry. The Tap and Go Transport Service is an online platform that offers several public transportation services. One of the services is a digital card that comes pre-loaded with cash. You may pay for your ride by simply tapping the card on a fixed machine on a bus or train. For anyone who would prefer not to use the real card, there is now a virtual card option available on smartphones. This may be chosen using the Tap and Go app.
- On February 19, 2024, the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, opened the Tap and Go Transport Service in Accra at the Metro Mass Limited Head Office. The program seeks to combat structural issues in the public transportation industry, boost productivity, and aid in the battle against corruption. To solve these issues and formalize the unorganized transportation industry using a well-researched and proven technology, the government and the commercial sector created the Tap and Go Transport Service.
- The goal of the Tap and Go initiative is to create a single platform and system that will serve Ghana’s whole transportation ecosystem, which includes call-on-demand services akin to Uber, trotro, loaded taxis, and intra- and intercity bus services. The vast Tap and Go digital infrastructure is designed to accommodate more public transportation services, including parcel delivery and tracking, taxi services, inner-city bus services like Metro Mass and Ayalolo, and interstate city bus services.
- Dr. Bawumia has high hopes for the Tap and Go digital platform’s contribution to the decrease of corruption, particularly in Metro Mass Transport, the government-owned public transportation system. He thinks the Tap and Go system will be an effective tool for tackling problems like ticketing transparency, revenue loss mitigation, terminal wait time reduction, and operational cost optimization.
- Vice President Bawumia called on all parties involved in the transportation industry to seize this chance and collaborate in the direction of a future in which every travel is transparent, safe, effective, and available to everyone.
