- The marriage between former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan and his ex-wife, Gifty Gyan, was dissolved by the Accra High Court. Under the direction of Hafisata Ameleboba JA, the court determined that Gifty’s significant contribution qualified her for a portion of Asamoah Gyan’s estate. The court awarded Gifty two cars, a four-bedroom house at Spintex in Accra, a petrol station, and a property in the UK.
- Gifty Gyan was given permission to receive GH¢25,000 per month in maintenance fees, but she was not allowed freedom from paying alimony. The legendary Ghanaian football player demanded a DNA test, sued for divorce at the High Court, and denied ever having fathered their three children.
- All of the children were identified as Asamoah Gyan’s biological offspring following a successful DNA test. The court determined that Gifty’s paper marriage from 2002, when she was 17 years old, was not grounds for nullifying the marriage; rather, it was deemed lawful and continues to this day.
- The 2013 marriage between Asamoah Gyan and Gifty Gyan was dissolved by a declaration of nullity. The uncontested evidence established that the couples had been in a romantic connection since 2003 and had fathered two children before deciding to enter into an ordinance marriage, the court further found.
