- Following the departure of Jose Peseiro, who guided Nigeria to an Africa Cup of Nations silver medal, the country has been without a regular coach since February.
- The provisional captaincy of the national team has been given to Peseiro’s assistant, Finidi George. The Super Eagles’ international friendlies against Ghana on March 22 and Mali in Morocco four days later will be managed by George.
- He has already met with Super Eagles squad officials and begun working on his preparations for the international friendlies. He could be given consideration for the permanent position if his triumphs over rivals Ghana and Mali leave an impression.
- His first competitive task, should he be hired as Nigeria’s coach, will be a June 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana. George is hopeful that his attempt to convince NFF chiefs won’t be hampered by the absence of injured strikers Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi, as well as defenders Tyronne Ebuehi and Gabriel Osho of Luton Town.
