- If elected to president, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Mahama has promised to examine government-imposed levies on sports betting. A 10% tax is levied on all gains from lotteries and sports betting, according to a statute that was passed in March 2023.
- Mahama gave the people his word that his administration would examine the levy and evaluate all other taxes the government levied, not only those related to gambling. August 15, 2023, saw the start of the 10% withholding tax on all gross gaming profits by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), which replaced the 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) rate on each stake. Gaming businesses whose licenses are revoked in violation of the new regulation will be subject to fines.
- The continuing discussion about how much is being paid in taxes on sports betting and lottery wins in Ghana will now have a dynamic component thanks to Mahama’s pledge to examine the betting taxes.
- John Dramani Mahama, has declared that he will reverse the law banning the importation of automobiles older than ten years into Ghana. This is an attempt to get local manufacturing businesses to open local facilities and to give young people jobs in the automotive sector. Additionally, the new legislation offers import-duty discounts to businesses who assemble or manufacture automobiles in Ghana. In order to solve the issue of affordability, Mahama further demanded that the government buy a sizable percentage of freshly constructed cars from regional assembly businesses.
- He added that he will cancel the licensure exams for teachers in Ghana. This he said after reports of teachers failing the exams again on the second attempt. This statement has raised a lot of mixed feelings as some politicians, journalists and CSO’s disagree with it.
- Mahama also proposes a 24-hour economy, aiming to maximize productivity, create employment, and drive economic prosperity. Critics argue it’s unrealistic, unnecessary, or already existing, while others see it as a game changer for growth and development.
