- The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is one of the five opposition political parties in Ghana that has filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission (EC) before the Supreme Court in protest of the EC’s decision to confine the upcoming restricted voter registration drive to its district offices.
- The parties contend that the EC’s decision may deny many qualified voters their right to vote, preventing them from registering to vote and taking part in public elections.
- They have filed a request for an interlocutory injunction in an effort to prevent the planned restricted voter registration drive by the EC until the main legal dispute has been resolved.
- In accordance with Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution, Regulation 2(1)(2) of C.I. 1991, and the EC’s established procedures, the parties seek to guarantee that all qualified voters have access to the process.
- The plaintiffs have been advised by the Supreme Court’s Registrar that the deadline for filing the application for an interlocutory injunction will be decided on Monday.
- The restricted voter registration drive will target eligible Ghanaians who turned 18 after the 2020 registration drive and will run from September 12, 2023, through October 2, 2023.
