- MultiChoice Group (MCGJ.J), the largest pay-TV provider in Africa, was fined 150 million naira (US$107,142.86) by a Nigerian consumer tribunal on Friday for contempt of court. In addition, the business was mandated to provide a month of free service to its subscribers.
- Subscribers were upset when MultiChoice, the company that runs the pay-TV services DSTV and GOTV in Nigeria, raised subscription costs by roughly 25% in May. Following a case brought by subscriber Festus Onifade in April, who claimed that MultiChoice’s eight-day notice prior to the price hike was insufficient, the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) rendered its ruling.
- Following MultiChoice Nigeria’s disobedience of an earlier decision to stop the price rise, the CCPT ruled on Friday.
- A request for comments from MultiChoice was not immediately answered, and the company’s attorneys had not yet said if they would appeal the decision.
