- Raila Odinga urged civil disobedience nationwide to overturn new tax hikes approved by parliament, in a speech to his followers in Nairobi.
- Odinga, last year’s presidential runner-up, urges mass protests against President William Ruto’s government.
- President Ruto signed new tax measures into law that raise the value-added tax on fuel products from 8% to 16%. It also introduces a 1.5% housing levy on employees’ basic pay, charged to both the employer and employee. The money is supposed to go to a fund to construct homes for the less well-off.
- Odinga said, “Through civil disobedience, we will deny Ruto the taxes he thinks he can extort from us by force. We are taking back our power,”
- Mr. Odinga urged public transport operators to increase carrying capacity to cover higher operational costs and asked police officers to permit overloading. He suggested embracing tax boycotts by limiting petrol consumption through carpools and requested that employers disregard punitive tax deductions.
