- Samuel Awuku was chosen as Vice President of the African Lotteries Association (ALA), the first Anglophone director-general to hold the office since the organization’s founding in December 1981. The purpose of the ALA General Meeting in Casablanca, Morocco, was to elect new members of the Executive Committee and to examine the organization’s Activity Report. The President of the Loterie Nationale de Cote d’Ivoire (LONACI), Dramane Coulibaly, was re-elected to a four-year term. The General Secretary position was assumed by Omar Skali, the Director-General of SOREC in Morocco.
- In the ALA, which is predominately Francophone, Awuku’s election is viewed as a major step toward more representation for Anglophone nations. At the moment, ALA has 16 member organizations from 15 African nations; the only Anglophone members are Ghana and Liberia. It was a fiercely contested election, and Awuku’s win demonstrates their faith in him. Andrew Tuah, the NLA’s Head of Operations, and Johnson Adu, the Bilingual Communications Officer, did a great job representing him. In the next weeks, an Extraordinary General Assembly is planned to formally swear in the recently elected members of the ALA Executive Committee.
