- A national indefinite strike has been launched by the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) and the Senior Staff Association of Universities in Ghana (SSSAG) in protest of inadequate pension and service conditions.
- Isaac Donkoh, the association’s national chairman, signed and released a press release stating that the government’s failure to address senior university staff welfare issues, particularly with regard to crucial pension and condition of service issues as outlined in the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), was the reason behind the decision.
- On January 17, 2024, a Wednesday, the strike began.
- In response to repeated requests, he revealed that the government had refused to release the Tier-2 Pension contributions to the Board of Trustee for efficient investment management in compliance with the Pension Act. He also demanded the immediate reversal of the unlawful cancellation of their overtime allowance, which was blatantly against the terms of their employment agreement with the government.
- The decision to go on an indefinite strike was made since all attempts to persuade the government to release the pension money and reinstate the overtime allowance had failed.
- Following notification of the industrial action, the Labour Commission has invited the following parties to a meeting tomorrow, Thursday, January 18, 2024, for a hearing on the issues in dispute: the Chairman of Vice-Chancellors Ghana, the National Chairman of SSA-UoG, the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, the National Pensions Regulatory Authority, and the Ministers of Education, Employment, and Labor Relations.
